I have always been an artist at heart, although I wasn’t able to pursue my artistic interests in earnest until leaving the world of work a few years ago. I do most of my work from observation as well as photo references, and am lucky to live on the Oregon coast where there is no shortage of inspiration. The constantly changing seascape, the capes and headlands, coastal forest, rivers, and an abundance of wildlife offer rich subject matter for my watercolor and acrylic paintings. As often as possible I also sketch and paint from life. It is always a fun challenge to capture and convey the human form in all its variety.
Most of my work is representational in nature but for the most part I do not strive for realism – I enjoy leading the viewer to see what is not really there by offering suggestions of color, light and shadow. You may notice that from one piece to another my art varies significantly in subject matter and style. I try not to get stuck in place and love to experiment with different mediums, paints, textures and ground to create different effects. Right now one of my favorite surfaces to paint on is something called Yupo, a synthetic 100% recyclable, tree-free paper that provides an amazingly beautiful canvas to work with. Its smooth, bright white allows me to go big and bold with color and create effects unmatched by any other surface. I hope you enjoy my work, it is a pleasure to create and I am always thrilled when a piece I love finds its way into someone else’s home for them to enjoy.
Please come back to the Artists Coop Gallery any time you are on the coast, I’d love to meet and talk with you. Best wishes, Bill
