My carvings are inspired from the best two-dimensional art that I can find from the Northwest Coastal Indian tribes, namely the Haida (from the Queen Charlotte Islands), the Tlingit (from Southeast Alaska) the Tsimshian (from Northwest British Columbia, opposite the Queen Charlotte Islands), the Kwakwaka'wakw (Northern Vancouver Island and opposite coast of British Columbia) and Nuu-chah-nulth (Western Vancouver Island).
I have found my temperament well suited to what some consider the tedious nature of relief-carving. I enjoy the exacting removal of wood but will confess that I enjoy less the repeated painting required to achieve the brilliant colors of the pieces. I feel blessed to have found this wonderful art form at this time in my life.
