My love affair with art began early (I was 6 or 7 as I remember) and it has never waned much over the years. Although there was a 20+ year hole in my pursuit of fine art, while I practiced Architectural Design, Drafting, and Illustration, and raised a family. In retrospect this hiatus did my art a good thing, producing a maturity attainable probably in no other way.
Much surrealism aims to trick the eye and mind, stringing mysterious images together, constructing some obscure tale which is never explained. My goal for my art is not so much to fool the eye, but rather to tickle the mind – while avoiding the trap of cliches which leads to trivial pointless entertainment. There is a serious side of life as well, and our world is in trouble these days. Artists must comment on this. And comment I will (such as in “Stone Groovin’ on Wall Street”) even if it costs me popularity.
Mostly though, my work is a celebration of life and art among the headlands of the Oregon Coast; quirky surreal ideas and images; dreamscapes on the shores of Yaquina Bay.”
All the drawings exhibited here have stories attached to them, which can be viewed on my website: www.dreamscapes.ws (a copy is also attached to the back of the frames). With, or without the story line, I hope my work both entertains and challenges you.
